Protecting Your New Chalkboard:
By keeping your chalkboard away from curious hands and water,
your chalk design should last you for years. However, if you
are planning on putting your chalkboard in a busy place where
it could be smudged or splashed on, you should consider using
a fixative or cover for your board.
Spray Fixative and Varnish: Your board can be sprayed with a fixative to help
adhere the chalk to the board, but it will not protect the board from smudging.
A varnish cover on the board will protect the chalk to a point, but it can
be (with some elbow grease) removed. The varnish option will limit the re-usage
of your chalkboard, as it tends to ruin the board face.
Plexi-Glass Cover: Another option for a high-traffic area is to cover your
chalkboard with a non-glare plexi-glass. This will allow you to re-use the
board, make changes, etc, but without spraying a fixative on the board face.
Your new chalkboard will last for many years if you take some
simple steps to protect and take care of it!
